Ride for Refuge
The 2014 Hamilton Ride for Refuge was a wonderful success! 262 riders on 40 teams raised nearly $84,500 for 26 partners which included local ministries like Micah House, Mission Services, Helping Hands, Walk with Me, and Indwell. It also included a number of partners working globally like Crossroads Relief Development, Speroway, MCC, and Ontario Gleaners.
Coming together again to raise vitally needed funding for those who are displaced, vulnerable, and exploited was a privilege that created its own excitement, which was a blessing because the day didn’t start off looking too good. The riders and volunteers all woke up to a cold steady rain. Bad weather is always an interesting reality when doing the Ride for Refuge. Its somehow fitting if a ride for the oppressed and disenfranchised is uncomfortable—the discomfort is a reminder that you are riding for something bigger than yourself. But as people arrived at Hamilton District Christian High School to set up the atmosphere was encouraging. Everyone was just having fun being together to make a difference. As the food team started preparing the lunch and the registration team got their final instruction in anticipation of the 260+ riders that would soon come their way, they continued to pray for a break in the weather. By the time the ride began at 9 the skies had completely cleared! And while over the course of the day they still had winds and the occasional rain shower, it was far better than the reports were predicting. One more reminder of how God is at work in the midst of the mundane aspects of life and an encouragement to all of us to be praying for those we were riding for.
A special thanks to Jill Trites and her coordinating team who do such a great job of organizing, promoting and running the Ride. Well done team! Having churches like The Meeting House, Immanuel Christian Reformed Church, Eucharist Church, and our newest volunteer partner St. Clair Community Church come together to make the Ride happen is a great picture of the kind of collaboration in mission that is at the heart of TrueCity.
