Backpacks 2011

The annual Backpack project is an example of the TrueCity movement in action – churches working alongside each other, accomplishing something that one church could never do alone, making a real difference to people living in Hamilton. For many of us our first involvement with the concept of TrueCity may likely have been as a part of this August tradition.

Summer 2011 was no exception.  Over the month of August funds were raised, supplies were unloaded, 1100 backpacks were filled and delivered to Hamilton schools – all through the efforts of TrueCity churches in partnership with Start to Finish (formerly Kidsfest Canada), a non-profit organization dedicated to giving children who live in high need situations the encouragement and support needed to succeed.

These photos tell the story – over 70 people of all ages, representing 17 different Hamilton and area churches gathered together in shifts filling backpacks with quality school supplies for elementary students.  A highlight is backpack delivery day when representatives from local churches have a chance to connect personally with schools in their community. It is a great stepping stone for further collaboration.  Backpacks – truly an example of churches working together for the good of the city.
